OSU-NEWARK
STUDENT RESEARCH GRANTS
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Friday, May 2nd, 2008
The
Faculty and Administration of Ohio State Newark recognize that the academic
experience is not limited to the classroom. In conjunction with the
university’s dedication to enhancing the undergraduate research experience,
Ohio State Newark is proud to offer Student Research Grants (SRGs) of up to
$1,000 per project in for the 2007-2008 academic year. Funds are available
for students of all undergraduate majors and can be utilized for a variety
of purposes, including, but not limited to; research, creative work, and
professional development. Recipients are strongly encouraged to consider
presenting their proposal or completed project at the OSUN Student Research
Forum in March 2008 and their completed work at the Denman Undergraduate
Research Forum in Columbus in May 2008.
Examples
of fundable expenses:
The above
list is not exhaustive and all students pursuing projects that will serve to
enrich their undergraduate academic experience are encouraged to apply.
Please note: 1) Hypothesis driven research projects will be given top
priority for funding; 2) All travel related expenses must be
pre-approved by the Chair of the Student Matters Committee or the
Dean/Director; 3) Due to budget limitations, SRGs may no longer be used to
fund conference related travel unless the applicant(s) will be presenting at
the conference (proof of attendance may be requested); 4) Each project may
receive funding only once per academic year, though individuals may seek
funding for more than one project per academic year.
Application and Supporting Materials: Completed applications must
include a project proposal, an itemized budget, and a recommendation letter
from the project advisor.
Application Form (form is in .doc format, you will need access to
Microsoft Word to open it)
Human
and Animal Subjects: There are special requirements to receive final
approval for all projects that will involve human or animal subjects. All
researchers working with human subjects must seek approval for their
project from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and complete a specific
training session online prior to receiving funding or conducting
research. The Chair of the Student Matters Committee is required to request
both an IRB protocol number and a verification sheet from the online
training before issuing a final approval of the grant. More information can
be found at
http://orrp.osu.edu/index.cfm. All researchers working with animal
subjects must seek approval for their project from the Institutional
Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), must conduct their research in an
approved facility (Founders Hall 2126 is an approved facility for amphibian
work), and must complete a mandatory Animal Usage Orientation course
prior to receiving funding or conducting research. The Chair of the
Student Matters Committee is required to request both an IACUC protocol
number and a verification sheet from the online training prior to final
approval of the grant. More information can be found at
http://orrp.osu.edu/index.cfm.
Enrollment Conditions: Applicants must be working under the direction of
an Ohio State Newark faculty member. Applicants generally must be enrolled
as full-time Ohio State Newark students (at least 12 credit hours) to be
considered eligible for SRG funding, although part-time enrollment with a
heavy research emphasis is allowable.
Method
of Selection: Applications, proposals, and letters of recommendation are
reviewed by a committee of faculty from a variety of academic fields.
Applicants will be selected on the merits of their application, the
feasibility of the proposed project, and the potential of the proposed
project to impact the professional and educational development of the
recipient. Successful applicants will receive a letter by email notifying
them of the status of their application.
Final
Report: Students who receive SRG funding will be expected to submit a
one to two page report addressing how they have benefited from the award in
addition to documentation (receipts) of their expenditures.

The OSUN
Student Research Assistantship
Faculty
members apply for these grants of $1,500 to sponsor student research
assistants. The funds are designated for student salary or wages, or student
research-related travel. Proposals are judged on their intellectual/scientific
quality, the likelihood of completing the project, the potential impact of the
completed project on the field of study, and the academic merits of the faculty
member. These grants give faculty members a wonderful opportunity to fund
students involved in research.

The OSUN Undergraduate
Research Forum
OSUN
will host the fourth annual undergraduate student research forum March 6,
2008 at the Reese Center, beginning at 12:30pm and concluding with an awards
ceremony from 4:30-5:00pm. This forum aims to increase collaborative,
student-faculty research endeavors at the Newark Campus, to encourage
increased participation in honors research, and to further the goals of the
OSU Denman Undergraduate Forum (see below) at the Newark Campus. There will
be two categories of poster presentations; 1) Research Proposal posters that
form a foundation for actual future research, and 2) Completed Research
posters that represent active or completed projects.
New this year!
We will have a new presentation category for the 2008 forum – Oral
Presentations. If your project is best presented in a format other than a
poster, then this is the category for you! If you would like to read a
formal paper or creative work, or discuss your work using a PowerPoint
presentation, we encourage you to participate in this category. There will
be two categories of oral presentations; 1) Research Proposal presentations
that form a foundation for future work, and 2) Completed Research
presentations that represent active or completed projects.
There
are prizes for 1st and 2nd place winners in each category and additional
money to fund winners to attend the OSU Denman Undergraduate Forum. A call
for abstracts is now available (Call
for Abstracts 2008). Contact Dr. Andrew Roberts (roberts.762@osu.edu)
for further information or to submit an abstract.

Richard and Martha Denman established the Denman Undergraduate Research
Forum for several purposes:
·
To
encourage honors students to develop their research skills to higher levels.
·
To
encourage all undergraduates to participate in research as a value added to
their education.
·
To
provide an opportunity to showcase outstanding student research, for
students to communicate their research to others, and for
