The Laurel Collegiate Society in a student organization open to all Honors and Honors-eligible students (those with a cumulative GPA of 3.4). The LCS seeks to foster a sense of community, encourage leadership and service, and expand the intellectual and cultural horizons of high-achieving students. Students who join have the opportunity to participate in the many enriching activities of the LCS, including reading circles, cultural outings, fireside chats with professors, and a spring trip.
In the past, LCS members have helped the community and campus by volunteering at the Salvation Army and serving a free dinner on campus, discussed novels such as The Kite Runner and A Lesson Before Dying in its quarterly Reading Circle, visited the Franklin Park Conservatory, Old Man’s Cave, and the Italian Festival, joined Dr. Richard Shiels on a guided tour of the Newark Earthworks, and toured the Works in Newark. Spring trips have included travel to Canada, Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh. One-credit honors courses also sometimes include travel; in Spring 2011, for example, Dr. Jose Cabral is leading students on a three-day trip to D.C.
