Our Peer Writing Consultants are tutor-iffic!
We are staffed by student PWCs who, because of their success in writing, have been invited to take our tutor training course, English 467, Writing and Learning. They gain experience tutoring and conducting small group writing workshops as their practicum for the course, upon the successful completion of which they become eligible to work in the Studio. While many of the PWCs are English and education majors, we welcome PWCs from all majors to provide a resource of writers with different backgrounds for our students.

Alex Chien Rank: Juniorish Major: English/Psychology Why Tutor Writing? I figured it was tutor or be tutored. Seriously though, I love all aspects about writing (some parts less than others). I also know how frustrating it can be so it'd almost be a crime to not share my knowledge and experience with people willing to become better. Favorite Piece of Literature: "The Catcher in the Rye" This book made me want to become a writer. Holden Caulfield is a unreliable, hypocritical, hysterical character that is fatefully the narrator to this rabbit-hole of a tale. The reader has no choice but to take his flawed perception of the world surrounding him as truth, yet at times it becomes hard to not question Holden and his intentions which makes this book more real than not, despite being founded on a distorted narration by an estranged teenager. Most Embarrassing Quality: My laughs. I have been told that I have more than 10 laughs that range from loud and obnoxious, evil and just plain weird. Since I find everything funny, I don't think there's a solution to this problem haha. |
Ellenor Dwyer Rank: Junior Major: I am a History major and minoring in English. Why tutor writing? Well, I love writing. Having the opportunity to tutor was a powerful learning experience for me last quarter and provided me with ways to think about and discuss writing that I had not yet encountered. Favorite piece of Literature: I mean, the Bible. Otherwise, I usually fall in love with what I am currently reading. Which right now is a collection of speeches, letters, and poetry written by Elizabeth I. Most embarrassing quality: Um, when I get stressed out my eyebrows turn red. |
Brewster Frusher Rank: Junior Major: Natural Resource Management Why tutor writing? I enjoy hearing and helping others-- so politics wasn't going to suffice. Favorite piece of Literature: Mark Twain Letters from the Earth Most embarrassing quality: I have a rare form of magnetism that attracts displaced cats and repels coolness. |
Beth Goodwin Rank: Junior Major: English Why Tutor Writing? I have always enjoyed helping people with their writing, so When I heard about working at the Writer’s Studio it sounded like something I would like. Favorite Piece of Literature: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Most Embarrassing Quality: Due to bad allergies, I sometimes snort when I laugh. |
Laurinda Johnson Rank: Junior Major: English—Creative Writing For Entertainment Why Tutor Writing? When I saw the class (English 467) I knew it would be a class I would enjoy. Since I’ve always loved writing and talking about writing, I knew that this was the perfect place for me to be. And why not make money doing something you love? Favorite Piece of Literature: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig is an awesome book that I base most of my philosophies about life on, but for fluff my favorite has to be The Hollow Kingdom Trilogy. Most Embarrassing Quality: I’m horrible at public speaking. My voice starts quivering so badly that I sound like I’m going to burst into tears. |
Shane Lanning Rank: Senior Major: English Why Tutor Writing? I had to bring my own style into being without help or assistance. I don't wish that on anyone. Favorite Piece of Literature: Candide (brilliant!) Most Embarrassing Quality: I'm an English major, but I always test higher in Math on standardized tests.
Theresa Laughlin Rank: Sophomore Major: English Education Why tutor writing? Because I think that writing is a great way to express how you feel and it is something that you can constantly get better at doing. So I wanted to become a tutor to help people love writing as much as I do. Favorite Piece of Literature: Oh gosh. Uhh, poems? Non-specifically. I love all Literature. Most embarrassing quality: When I think of something to write that excites me I will hop up and down in my seat… no matter where I am or who is around. |
Annie McCoy Rank: Senior Major: English Why Tutor Writing? I like being a part of another person's writing process. Favorite piece of Literature: The Ink series by Cornelia Funke Most embarrassing quality: I love junk food, especially Ruffles Sour Cream and Cheddar chips with a 20 oz of Mountain Dew! |
Wendy Mohler Rank: Senior Major: Psych and English Why Tutor Writing? I enjoy most anything and everything that has to do with writing. Favorite Piece of Literature: "Surreal Qualities," because I wrote it. Most Embarrassing Quality: I have a pretty nasty, ugly, loud, and full of energy temper; dynamite comes in small packages.

Will Moran What is your current Rank? Junior What is your current Major? English Why did you decided to tutor writing? I got multiple emails saying how badly they needed tutors so I signed up. It turned out to be one of the best things I've done at OSU. What is your favorite piece of Literature? Moby Dick and Dune and Watchmen. The holy triumvirate? What is your most embarrassing quality? The amount of time I can sink into a video game. Morrowind, Minecraft, The Sims--they've all stolen years from my life. |
Emilee Morgan Rank: First Year M. Ed Student Major: Master of Education in Language Arts and Mathematics Why Tutor Writing? I have always loved writing and when I found out that I could get paid to work with people on their own writing, I was in! Favorite Piece of Literature: The Bible, but really…there are some good stories up in there. Most Embarrassing Quality: I have many, but the only one that I am willing to share with strangers (after careful thought) would be that I have taken the whole “To-Do” List to a completely new level…I have to make a list of EVERYTHING…. I…have a problem. |
Ryan Palmer Rank: Junior Major: English Why tutor writing? I like to help people refine their ideas and try to make more sense of their world. Oh and getting paid never hurt anyone. I also think that if I help enough people they will have my back whenever I try to take over the world through some devious and diabolical scheme. Favorite piece of Literature: Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe. This story reminds me that no matter how well you think you have it, or how long you think that you can delay it, you're going to die eventually, so you may as well party. Most embarrassing quality: I have a really bad girlish tattoo that I had to get after losing a bet. No, you cannot see it. |
Jodi Robinson Rank: Senior Major: Sociology and English Why Tutor Writing? The ability to write well enables one to be heard, without uttering a single word. Writing is universal; it crosses cultures and beliefs, and has stood the test of time. Written word encourages, engages and gives solace to the weary, it lifts our hearts, makes us smile, and lulls us to sleep at night. Writing has, is, and always will be. Favorite Piece of Literature: The poems my father penned during his battle with cancer. Most Embarrassing Quality: I belch; I’m loud, obnoxious and immature. I have been told I have a mouth like a sailor. |
Rachel Williams Rank: “I’m a third-year senior” Major: I like to call myself an English B.A. Why Tutor Writing? Well, I like to tell people what to do. (Kidding) I took the introductory tutoring writing class (English 467) kind of on accident, and in the process realized that I kind of enjoyed it. The more time I spent/spend in the Writer's Studio, the more things I find I like about it. Plus, tutoring forces me not to let myself be a slacker. Favorite Piece of Literature: Shoot. Toughie. Atonement (Ian McEwan), The Great Gatsby, Dubliners, or 1984 top the list. Most Embarrassing Quality: I talk. Incessantly.
