 PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Ohio State University Newark offers both the traditional, three year Part-Time MSW Option and the ASAP Program Option (for those applicants with a BSSW in Social Work) on the Newark campus.  These programs provide the opportunity to enroll in The Ohio State University's nationally recognized and fully accredited MSW program with the convenience of being close to home.  Both programs allow students to complete the program on a part-time basis with all of the Newark campus courses being schedule during the evening or the occasional weekend class.  Students will be required to take 6 at the Columbus campus to complete their degree.  Those courses are offered at many different times, including evening hours.

The MSW program prepares graduates for advanced social work practice.  The program consists of three principal parts:   In our foundation curriculum students master the theoretical knowledge, professional values, and core competencies common to all social work practice.  The advanced concentration is highly applied and focuses on acquiring expertise as a master's prepared social worker in one of several practice areas.   The extensive field practicum experiences integrate theory and both foundation and advanced practice and provides highly mentored opportunities in which students further refine their skills as professional social workers.

Regional campus students receive the same quality educational experience as their Columbus campus counterparts.  Classes are taught by College of Social Work faculty and community instructors using the same syllabi and texts used at the Columbus campus.  In addition, the regional campuses provide a full array of services for their students: financial aid counseling, academic advising, library services, student activities, computer labs, disability services, bookstore, physical activities center and free parking.

PROGRAM OPTIONS

REGULAR PART-TIME PROGRAM -  This 63 credit hour program is a 3 year, part-time program which gives the students the opportunity to work and complete their degree.  We enroll competitive students from diverse backgrounds and with diverse practice interests.  The program starts fall semester and continues for nine consecutive semesters.  Students typically take 2 classes per semester.  The first year of the program is completed exclusively at the Newark campus.  The remaining two years students will be completing some of their course work at the Columbus campus (a total of 6 courses)  in conjunction with field practicums that may be completed in their home community.

ADVANCED STANDING ALTERNATIVE PLAN (ASAP) - This 43 credit hour program is open to students who have received a bachelors degree in social work from an accredited social work program.  Students must have graduated with their degree in the past 5 years and have a minimum 3.0 GPA.  This program is completed in 2 years with the first year being completed at the Newark campus.  The final year of the program students are expected to take four classes at the Columbus campus in conjunction with a field practicum that may be completed in their home community.
