The Ohio State University at Newark Student Research Forum

This annual event is open to students of all disciplines conducting work under the direction of an Ohio State Newark faculty member or lecturer.  The forum aims to increase collaborative, student-faculty research endeavors at the Newark Campus, to encourage participation in honors research, and to further the goals of the OSU Denman Undergraduate Research Forum and the OSU Undergraduate Research Office at the Newark Campus.  Students currently conducting research or preparing proposals are encouraged to submit an abstract in one of the categories outlined below. Presentations are judged by a diverse panel including Ohio State Newark faculty as well as corporate representatives who will select category winners and provide valuable feedback to entrants. Student Research Grant recipients and/or those planning to present at the Denman Forum in Columbus are especially encouraged to participate. Ohio State Newark will host the eigth annual Student Research Forum on March 8, 2012 at the Warner Center. Abstracts are currently being accepted through January 27, 2012.

2012 Student Research Forum - March 8, 2012 - Current Schedule

  • 1:00pm - Doors Open to the Public
  • 1:00-3:30pm - Student Presentations
    • Poster Presentations in Warner 126
    • Oral Presentations in Warner 175
  • 3:30-4:30pm - Break and Workshop Program in Warner 126, Judges Deliberate
  • 4:30-5:30pm - Award Ceremony
    • Speakers to be announced

Presentation Categories: Projects are divided into four categories, each of which is judged independently of other categories. There are prizes for 1st and 2nd place winners in each category and additional money to fund winners to present at the OSU Denman Undergraduate Forum.

  • Poster Presentations: Projects are presented in the form of a poster.  Typically, presenters prepare a five to ten minute oral summary of their work and use the poster to guide listeners through the major points of the project or proposal.  This presentation style is somewhat less formal than the Oral Presentation and allows more one on one contact with the judges and audience.  If you and your faculty sponsor feel that your project is best presented as a poster, this is the category for you.
    • Research Proposal Posters: The Research Proposal category is appropriate for student-generated research proposals that may develop into research projects.  If you have an idea for a research project, this is a great excuse to approach your favorite professor as a sponsor.
    • Completed Research Posters: The Completed Research category is appropriate for active or completed research projects with at least some pilot data available.
  • Oral Presentations: Projects are presented in the form of a paper or PowerPoint presentation.  Typically, presenters prepare a 15-20min presentation/demonstration which is given from a podium with several minutes reserved at the end for the audience to ask questions.  This presentation style is somewhat more formal than the Poster Presentation and allows less one on one contact with the judges and audience. If you and your faculty sponsor feel that your project is best presented as an oral presentation, this is the category for you.
    • Research Proposal Presentations: The Research Proposal category is appropriate for student-generated research proposals that may develop into research projects.  If you have an idea for a research project, this is a great excuse to approach your favorite professor as a sponsor.
    • Completed Research Presentations: The Completed Research category is appropriate for active or completed research projects with at least some pilot data available, formal thesis papers, or performance art projects.
