Welcome to the Ohio State Newark and to its programs in the language and literature of the English-speaking world.

In the English Program here you will find specialists in varied fields: Renaissance English literature, rhetoric and composition, 20th century black American novelists, the British moderns, and women writers, among others. These scholars are also dedicated classroom teachers: approachable, experienced, and creative.

Our commitment to thinking, reading, and writing well — in disciplines outside of English as well as in English courses — is the foundation of our curriculum. We have high expectations of ourselves and of our students. These expectations underlie our courses in writing, literature, theory — everything that we teach.

As diverse as our areas of expertise are, we all believe that the ability to communicate with purpose, clarity, and authority is central to our hopes for our students: that they will responsibly and confidently participate in the opportunities that this century will afford them and that they will be able to meet the personal and intellectual challenges of contemporary American life with courage, creativity, and insight.
