Matherscize Mathematics Camp for Middle Grades Girls
Announcement
Dr. Diana B. Erchick/OSU Newark

What: Thirteenth Annual Matherscize Mathematics Camp for Middle Grades Girls

For: Girls who will be going into grades 5-7 in September 2013.

When: One full week, summer 2013

Time: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Where: OSU Newark

Cost: The camp is offered free of charge.

Other details: The girls each will need to bring a packed lunch daily, or money to buy a cafeteria lunch. Most girls in the past have packed a lunch.

Focus and Perspective: The purpose of the camp is to help all interested girls - those who are struggling in mathematics as well as those who already enjoy and are successful in mathematics - learn to reason through mathematics activities in a supportive community-like environment. We emphasize the processes of mathematics, including problem solving, reasoning, communication, representations of mathematics, and connections between mathematics and other content areas. We do less stressing of facts and procedures and more reasoning and justification for problem solutions. The camp mission is to help girls develop positive dispositions towards mathematics, an appreciation of the presence of mathematics in their world, and skills to communicate and network around mathematics activity. We typically do things like: problem solving, playing games of logic and probability, integrate literature, science and the arts into mathematics, and complete building projects.

Application: The application, both on-line and downloadable versions, may be accessed at:
http://www.newark.osu.edu/derchick/matherscize/Pages/default.aspx The application is available from late March until the end of May.

Acceptances are made on a first-come, first-served basis, with consideration of equal distribution across grade levels and schools.

Links for the camp flyer, teacher recommendation, and the volunteer application also are available on the page. Those links will be available from late March 2013 until the end of May 2013.

Further details on directions, emergency medical forms, and other details will be sent to accepted applicants after the closing deadline.

Thank you for your interest in Matherscize!!
