OUR MISSION

The mission of the Office of Access and Engagement is to establish meaningful partnerships and opportunities within our local community. We focus primarily on educational access, developing students as civically engaged leaders and service scholars, and supporting the community through campus awareness and collaboration.

OUR FOCUS

Access is ensuring that all students regardless of resources or financial status have the opportunity to pursue post secondary education and training. The four pillars of our work are: availability, affordability, academic preparation, and aspiration. We motivate individuals of all ages to strive towards education beyond high school and to prepare themselves academically for college. We assist students and their families in understanding how to make college affordable.

PROGRAMS AND COLLABORATIONS

EXPLORE College- College planning workshops for parents with elementary school students and College Club led by Ohio State Newark students for K-5.

Big Brothers Big Sisters on Campus - Promoting faculty, staff, and student participation in mentoring area youth through tutoring, school and campus visits.

LeFevre Fellows– An autumn quarter service learning course that awards $1,500 for 60 hours of service in the winter and spring quarters.

Next Step Mentoring and Tutoring Program- Ohio State students are matched with Licking County Juvenile court-involved youth in middle and high school for mentoring and tutoring on the Ohio State Newark campus. The program counts as a 5-credit internship course for OSU students.

Newark Campus Access Campaign - Collaborating with Central Ohio Technical College to implement a college access campaign on campus to bring awareness to faculty, staff, and students about the barriers to education faced by many within our community.

CAN DO Access – An educationally access-focused partnership formed in 2009 between 5 local institutions: COTC, A CALL TO COLLEGE, Newark City Schools, Denison University, and Ohio State Newark. The goal is to strengthen the educational aspirations and achievements of young people in our community.

Community Partners and Affiliations– We welcome collaboration with local and state-wide organizations committed to improving educational outcomes for all.
