Daddy Long Legs Set to Open at Black Box Theater
The Black Box Theater at The Ohio State University at Newark is proud to present Daddy Long Legs, a family-friendly musical by John Caird with music and lyrics by Paul Gordon.
Set in turn-of-the-century New England, the musical tells the story of orphan Jerusha Abbott of the John Grier Home and her mysterious benefactor who agrees to send her to college, who she dubs "Daddy Long Legs" after seeing his elongated shadow. Under the conditions of her benefactor, Jerusha must send him a letter once a month, reporting her progress and impressions of the college and life outside the orphanage.
Appearing in the production are Abigail Sexton playing the orphan Jerusha and Ben Marteney as the shy and socially awkward benefactor, Jervis Pendleton. Musical direction is provided by Paul D. Sanders, professor of music education at Ohio State Newark.
"Daddy Long Legs is a beautiful two-person musical based on the 1912 epistolary novel of the same name by Jean Webster,” said director Edie L. Norlin. “I first read it as an adolescent and fell in love with the plucky young orphan who becomes the ward of a mysterious benefactor. When I heard it had been made into a stage show I was very leery at first but traveled to Pittsburgh to see it. It was amazing, capturing the characters and the spirit of the book perfectly! I decided then and there to produce it when I could. A small, quiet show, its score is simply lovely. A treat for the whole family!"
Performances run from Thursday through Saturday, November 14-16 and 21-23 with a 7:30 p.m. curtain. There are also two Sunday matinees on Nov. 17 and 24 at 2 p.m. General admission is $10 and student tickets are $5. Tickets may only be purchased at the door.
The Black Box Theater is located in LeFevre Hall, 1199 University Drive, Newark, OH 43055.
