Public Art Photo Contest

Community members are encouraged to submit photos of public art in Licking County for a photography contest. The contest opens May 1, 2024, and submissions will be accepted until July 31, 2024. The winning photos will be part of a permanent display on the Newark campus in the newly renovated Louella Hodges Reese Hall.

Entry rules and agreement

To be eligible for the contest, each photo entry must be:

  • The original work of the entrant
  • Include the name and/or the location of the artwork (view map of public art in Licking County)
  • Submitted online by the deadline in an acceptable image format (jpg, gif or png)
  • No larger than 16MB and no smaller than 1MB

Note: Winning entries will be printed and framed for exhibition in an 8″ x 10″ format.

Release and Limitations of Liability

By entering the contest, you agree to release and hold harmless The Ohio State University, its respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents (the “ Released Parties” ) from and against any claim or cause of action arising out of participation in the contest or receipt or use of any prize, including, but not limited to: (a) unauthorized human intervention in the Contest; (b) technical errors; (c) printing errors; (d) late or undelivered mail or notice; (e) errors in the administration of the contest; or (f) injury or damage to persons or property. You waive the right to claim any attorneys’ fees and any damages whatsoever, including, but not limited to, punitive, consequential, direct or indirect damages. Except where prohibited, by accepting a prize, the winner grants Ohio State a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free license to use winner’s name and/or likeness without further authorization, compensation or remuneration of any kind for advertising, promotion and other publicity purposes.

Contest categories

1 Sculpture

Photo entry includes at least one publicly accessible sculpture located in Licking County

2 Mural

Photo entry includes at least one publicly accessible mural located in Licking County

3 People

Photo entry includes at least one person standing, sitting or interacting with a piece of public art located in Licking County

4 Animal

Photo entry includes at least one animal standing, sitting or interacting with a piece of public art located in Licking County

5 Nature’s Influence

Photo entry depicts the natural or seasonal beauty of a piece of public art located in Licking County

Judging Criteria and Awards

The committee will select first place, second place and third place winners for each of the five categories based on a combination of artistic expression, creativity, originality, quality and photo commentary.

There will be a People’s Choice award for the photo from each category that receives the highest number of votes via the Facebook voting phase.

A Best in Show winner will be selected by the judging committee based on all the entries.

Winning Photos

The winning photos (Best In Show, People’s Choice for each category and first place for each category) will be part of a permanent display on the Newark campus in the newly renovated Louella Hodges Reese Hall. Efforts will be made to credit the entrant.

Contest Timeline

Submission phase

May 1, 2024, to July 31, 2024 (11:59 pm EST)

Judging phase

Aug. 1, 2024, to Sept. 15, 2024
Winners will be contacted and notified directly by The Ohio State University via email. Ohio State will use the contact information provided by each winner. A Winners list will be announced on our social media and posted on our website by Sept. 30, 2024.
