Question What is the difference between a merit-based scholarship and a need-based scholarship?

Answer

A merit-based scholarship is awarded based on academic criteria only. A need-based scholarship is awarded based upon academic criteria along with demonstrated financial need (See the answer to question 4 below for the definition of need).

Question What are the criteria for receiving a scholarship?

Answer

To be considered for an Ohio State Newark scholarship you should:

  • Be accepted to Ohio State Newark for the upcoming autumn semester (by Jan. 1 for priority consideration).
  • Submit ACT or SAT scores as part of the application process
  • Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by Feb. 15 for priority consideration for need-based scholarships and other financial aid.

Question What is the typical academic profile of those who are awarded scholarships?

Answer

Merit scholarships are based upon the competitiveness of the applicant pool by reviewing the high school GPA and ACT/SAT scores of students. Merit awards can vary from year to year depending on the academic profile of applicants. Applicants with a high school GPA of 3.5 or above and an ACT score of 25 or above are likely to be considered merit scholarships. Merit awards are offered annually to the strongest academically performing applicants.

Question What type of scholarships are available?

Answer

Ohio State Newark offers a variety of scholarships for students. Scholarships are based upon specific criteria including, but not limited to: academic success, writing ability, leadership, community service involvement, residency requirements and financial need. A limited number of scholarships are also available to students transferring to our campus. Scholarship applications, when required, will be available online after Jan. 1.

Question Are scholarships available for transfer students?

Answer

Yes, a limited number of scholarships are available for transfer students who meet specific criteria.

Question How is financial need determined?

Answer

Financial need is determined using the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) which is determined by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

Question What if I am admitted to another Ohio State campus for autumn semester, but I want to be considered for a scholarship at Ohio State Newark?

Answer

Incoming students who have been accepted to another Ohio State campus may be considered for our scholarships once they update their application to the Newark campus. After acceptance, students may also apply to our Honors program. Students may decide not to participate in the Honors program after they complete the application and receive a scholarship. Click here for more information about the Honors program.

Question Are scholarship recipients required to take Honors courses?

Answer

Scholarship recipients are not required to take honors courses. Students who receive a Newark Endowed Merit Scholarship may be granted membership into the Honors program and can remain in the program so long as they maintain a 3.4 GPA and stay on target to meet the additional requirements for graduating with Honors distinction on their diploma.

Question I have been awarded a scholarship from Ohio State Newark. Can I also receive federal grants, loans and/or scholarships from other sources?

Answer

Yes, but by federal law, the total awarded dollars (scholarships, grants, loans, etc.) cannot exceed the total cost of attendance (including tuition, fees, living expenses and books) at Ohio State for one academic year.

Question What types of financial aid are available from other sources and how do I apply?

Answer

Visit the Student Financial Aid website at sfa.osu.edu. To apply for financial aid, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.gov.

Question What is the deadline to apply for merit and need-based scholarships?

Answer

Priority scholarship consideration is given to those who are accepted to Ohio State Newark by March 1 for the following autumn semester. Based on availability of funds, additional scholarship consideration will be given until all money is exhausted.

Students who submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by Feb. 15 will receive priority consideration for all need-based aid.

Question Where does the scholarship money come from?

Answer

Many of the scholarships are made possible by generous donations from our alumni, campus community and friends. We request that our scholarship recipients submit a thank you letter to the donor associated with their award.
