FIRST Tech Challenge Regional Competition January 9
NEWARK, Ohio, January 6, 2016 - For the second year, Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) and The Ohio State University at Newark are sponsoring the FIRST Tech Challenge Regional Ohio Competition. The event is being held on campus January 9, 2016. FIRST Tech Challenge is for students in grades 7-12. Teams are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format. Participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have!”
Guided by adult coaches and mentors, students practice engineering principles while realizing the value of hard work, innovation and sharing ideas. Teams also must raise funds, design and market their team brand, and do community outreach for which they can win awards. Participants have access to tens of millions of dollars in college scholarships.
This is the only Central Ohio FIRST Tech Challenge Tournament. Twenty-eight teams from Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky will be competing for the four slots to advance to the FTC State Championship in February.
This year’s challenge is called Res-Q. Robots will score points by: “resetting” rescue beacons; delivering rescue climbers to a shelter; parking on the mountain; and parking in the rescue beacon repair zone or floor goal. Robots may also score points by retrieving debris from the playing field and placing them in mountain or floor goals.
Teams are judged in the morning on their robot design process, engineering notebook, software design and outreach. Judging in the morning is closed to the public. The robot competition begins mid-morning with the Opening Ceremonies at 10:00 a.m. and continues after a break for lunch. Alliance selection is at 3:00 p.m. with the elimination rounds beginning at approximately 3:30 p.m. The awards ceremony is scheduled to begin at 5:15 p.m. The robot competition is free and open to the public.
FIRST is a world-wide non-profit organization with robotics programs for grades K – 12. Information regarding the founding of FIRST and their mission statement can be found here: http://www.firstinspires.org/about/vision-and-mission.
