Office of Academic Affairs
The associate dean for academic affairs supports the dean/director by overseeing the campus’s academic programming, processes and events. The associate dean also oversees the assistant deans for academic programming, guiding their work to define and maintain coherent pathways to degree completion.
- Collaborates with vice provost for academic programs and assistant deans for academic programming to ensure curricular integrity and manage the extension of degree programs from Ohio State’s colleges to the Newark campus.
- Serves on OAA’s Academic Program Advisory Committee and oversees the extension of the GE to the Newark campus.
- Oversees associated faculty, the office of advising, the office of student retention and success initiatives, first-year programming, course scheduling, and the Center for Student Success.
- Oversees first-year experience programming. Organizes the annual Graduation Celebration.
- Produces and disseminates the dean’s list. Receives student input on instruction.
- Serves on the COAM Advisory Committee and assists in conducting academic misconduct hearings by selecting panelists, communicating with the COAM office and arranging hearings.
- Serves on the Newark campus’s Academic Standards Committee. Oversees the AA degree process.
The associate dean for academic enrichment and outreach & engagement directs Honors, global education, and the Second-year Transformative Experience Program (STEP) as well as outreach and engagement initiatives and service learning courses:
- Oversees Honors admissions, retention, programming; liaisons with the university’s Honors and Scholars office and other regional Honors directors in creating pathways for students to graduate with Honors distinction.
- Plans for the development of global-education courses, assists faculty in developing and promoting global-education courses, promotes education abroad to students, and awards Newark Campus education abroad scholarships to students; liaisons with the university's Global Education unit.
- Plans for the development of and provides support for service learning courses, including the two-semester LeFevre Fellowship service learning course; liaisons with OAA’s Academic Enrichment office.
- Oversees STEP at the Newark campus, including recruiting and supporting students and faculty mentors; liaisons with the STEP office in Columbus and with STEP directors on other campuses.
- Collaborates with individuals and organizations in the local and regional community as well as with faculty members, staff members, and students on efforts to promote learning, to encourage area youth to aspire to attend college, to address social issues and to strengthen the community.
- Directs the LeFevre Fellows, a two-semester service-learning fellowship program, and promotes internship opportunities in the community.
- Organizes the Salute to Undergraduate Achievement, the annual student awards event; the annual Kids Tech college access event in collaboration with The Works; the campus’ Program 60 Give Back Go Forward initiative; and other outreach and social justice events and initiatives.
- Serves as liaison to the Fulbright Program for the regional campus; promotes and supports students and faculty seeking to apply for Fulbright funding.
The associate dean for faculty affairs supports the dean/director and works with the associate dean for academic affairs and assistant deans for academic programming to coordinate faculty recruitment, promotion and tenure policies and processes, and faculty resources. The associate dean leads a faculty-development team that includes the associate dean for academic affairs, the HR business partner, the assistant deans for academic programs, and the assistant dean for research.
- Coordinates and hosts workshops to support faculty pedagogical development.
- Collaborates with the chair of the Faculty Well-Being Committee to support the orientation for new faculty; coordinates peer reviews of teaching for tenure-track faculty.
- Provides support to faculty with questions about career development.
- Nominates faculty for external awards. Organizes receptions and dinners to recognize faculty accomplishments.
- Administers faculty awards.
- Cultivates nominations for university-level awards and external awards.
- Revises governance documents to incorporate changes in the pattern of administration or policies related to appointments, promotion and tenure as those changes occur.
- Leads the required review of the campus’s governance documents that is required when the dean/director is a reappointed or a new dean/director is appointed.
- Develops and runs P&T workshops for faculty. Provides an annual orientation for the P&T committee chair and subcommittee chairs.
- Reviews requests for faculty positions.
- Works with HR business partner to develop or revise faculty position descriptions to be used for faculty searches.
- Meets with candidates for faculty positions.
- Organizes search committees.
- Works with HR business partner to prepare offer letters.
- Organizes and runs an annual summer summit on teaching and learning.
- Approves faculty procurement and travel requests.
The assistant dean for research reports to the dean/director and supports the research activities of faculty and students at the Newark campus. Works with the chair of the Faculty Well-Being Committee to inform new faculty of the university’s and campus’s research resources.
- Approves all research-related expenditure and travel requests.
- Works with faculty committees to ensure that the campus maintains records of internal research grants and assistantships for faculty and students.
- Facilitates interdisciplinary research collaboration at the Newark campus.
- Reviews and approves recommendations from the Professional Standards Committee for Faculty-Initiated Student Assistantship Grants.
- Reviews and approves recommendations from the Professional Standards Committee for Scholarly Activities Grants; reviews and approves recommendations from the Student Matters Committee for Student Research Grants. Serves on Associate Deans for Research Council.
- Oversees the coordinator of the Student Research Forum.
- Serves on the dean/director’s Budget Advisory Committee; recommending annual budgets for internal research grants and assistantships, etc.
- Teaches undergraduate courses.
The assistant dean for arts and humanities (A&H) programming assists the associate dean for academic affairs in ensuring that all A&H courses and degree completion programs at the Newark campus are delivered in accordance with departmental, college and university expectations. That assistance extends over a broad range of activities, including hiring and evaluating associated faculty and staff, and budgeting and resource management. The position reports to the associate dean for academic affairs.
- Recommends an annual schedule of A&H courses that meets programmatic needs and student needs; recommend instructors for all courses to the associate dean for academic affairs.
- Evaluates the teaching of all A&H associated faculty, and conduct classroom-observation evaluations (possibly virtually, depending on mode of instruction) of full-time associated faculty every other year.
- Drafts annual performance evaluations of A&H associated faculty for the associate dean for academic affairs.
- Oversees the curricula and pedagogy for English 1109, 1110.01/.03, and 2367. Promotes the professional development of our associated faculty by offering pedagogical guidance via teaching observations, summaries of student discursive feedback, and individual consultations.
- Assists in the hiring and training of new faculty; supervise English placement testing, which includes devising tests, training readers, and reviewing testing results.
- Supervises the assistant coordinator of the Writer’s Studio. Sets the Writer’s Studio’s mission and goals.
- Coordinates tutor-teacher pedagogy in English 1110.03/1193.
- Supports undergraduate tutoring research.
- Collaborates with the Columbus campus’s directors of First-Year Writing and Second-Year Writing on university-wide assessments and programmatic maintenance.
- Serves on the faculty development team led by the assistant dean for faculty affairs. Prepares and manages the annual A&H financial plan. Teaches undergraduate courses.
The assistant dean for natural and mathematical sciences (NMS) programming assists the associate dean for academic affairs in ensuring that all NMS courses at the Newark campus are delivered in accordance with departmental, college and university expectations. That assistance extends over a broad range of activities, including hiring and evaluating associated faculty and staff, and budgeting and resource management. The position reports to the associate dean for academic affairs.
- Recommends an annual schedule of NMS courses that meets programmatic needs and student needs; recommend instructors for all courses to the associate dean for academic affairs. For all NMS associated and clinical/teaching/practice faculty, conducts teaching evaluations and drafts annual performance evaluations for the associate dean for academic affairs.
- Oversees the staff who assist with NMS labs and courses in the Alford Center. Liaisons with the facilities department in maintaining NMS teaching and research equipment in the Alford Center.
- Serves on the faculty development team led by the assistant dean for faculty affairs.
- Prepares and manages the annual NMS financial plan and expenditures.
- Teaches undergraduate courses.
The assistant dean for social and behavioral sciences (SBS) programming assists the associate dean for academic affairs in ensuring that all SBS courses and degree-completion programs at the Newark campus are delivered in accordance with departmental, college and university expectations. That assistance extends over a broad range of activities, including hiring and evaluating associated faculty and staff, and budgeting and resource management. The position reports to the associate dean for academic affairs.
- Recommends an annual schedule of SBS courses that meets programmatic needs and student needs.
- Recommends instructors for all courses to the associate dean for academic affairs. For all SBS associated and teaching faculty, conducts teaching evaluations.
- Drafts annual performance evaluations for the associate dean for academic affairs.
- Oversees the SONA coordinator for the psychology programs.
- Serves on the faculty development team led by the assistant dean for faculty affairs.
- Prepares and manages the annual SBS financial plan.
- Teaches undergraduate courses.
The coordinator for early childhood education assists the associate dean for academic affairs in ensuring that all early childhood education courses supporting degree completion programs offered by the Department of Teaching and Learning at the Newark campus are delivered in accordance with departmental, college and university expectations. That assistance extends over a broad range of activities, including hiring, supervising, and evaluating associated faculty and staff, and budgeting and resource management. The position reports to the associate dean for academic affairs.
- Recommends an annual schedule of education courses that meets programmatic needs and student needs; recommends instructors for all courses to the associate dean for academic affairs. For all education-associated and teaching faculty, conducts peer evaluations of teaching.
- Drafts annual performance evaluations for the associate dean for academic affairs. Serves on the faculty development team led by the assistant dean for faculty affairs.
- Conducts regular meetings of the Newark faculty and staff who support the BSED programs. Conducts orientations for students admitted to the BSED programs.
- Coordinates the Teaching and Learning area’s learning community in following guidance from the director of student success initiatives.
- Provides annual enrollment projections to the dean/director and the associate dean for academic affairs.
- Meets with Teaching and Learning area coordinators at the other regional campuses. Decides on course petitions and OBR requests.
- Communicates with the chair of the Department of Teaching and Learning.
- Prepares and manages the annual education financial plan.
- Teaches undergraduate courses.
