Department of Public Safety

Ohio State Newark is committed to providing a safe environment for students, faculty staff and visitors.

The Department of Public Safety works closely with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies regarding the reporting and investigation of crime. University security works in conjunction with Newark Police Department through a mutual aid agreement. We encourage accurate and prompt reporting of all crimes to the appropriate agency.

Buckeye Alerts

The Buckeye Alert System is a multi-modal, emergency notification system that includes nearly two dozen communication methods. Buckeye Alerts, often sent via text message, are issued when it is determined that the campus community needs to take immediate action to remain safe.

Emergency closing information

Should the closure of campus be necessary due to weather or other emergencies, text announcements will be sent via the Buckeye Alert System. 

Services

Campus Escort Service

The Newark Campus Safety Escort Program is for students, faculty or staff feeling unsafe walking alone. A campus security officer will accompany you and ensure that you are protected to your destination on campus. Arrangements can be made in advance or on the spot. The service is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Parking information and passes

All students and personnel are subject to traffic and parking regulations. In addition, standard traffic regulations and definitions, as enacted in the motor vehicle laws of the State of Ohio, will be enforced on campus property at all times.

Background checks/fingerprinting

These services are available to current and prospective students applying for specific academic programs. Individuals requesting these services must first pay the required fee online and then return to the Public Safety office with the receipt and a valid driver's license or state ID. Available 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily (including weekends).
