Jodie Wheeler receives Distinguished Alumni Award

The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to alumni who have achieved distinction in their field and/or impacted others through outstanding professional, personal or community contributions. Recipients must have attended Ohio State Newark for at least two semesters or three quarters.

The Ohio State University at Newark honored Jodie Wheeler with this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Wheeler received the annual award at the Alumni and Friends Homecoming Celebration dinner on Thursday, Oct. 2.

Since graduating with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Ohio State in 1990, Wheeler has worked at Wilson, Shannon and Snow, an accounting firm in downtown Newark. “It’s very rare these days to find a person who’s been in the same place of employment for 30 years,” said Ken Yeager, PhD, who received the Distinguished Alumni Award last year and nominated Wheeler for this year’s honor. “To me, it speaks to Jodie’s dedication to her employer and the community in which she works.”

That dedication to the community has manifested in many ways. She is a board member of The Woodlands Serving Central Ohio, a mental health services center in Newark. She is the treasurer of the Newark Sport and Event Commission and a member of the Zonta Club of Newark, a local women-led organization that serves, empowers and advocates for fellow women in Licking County. “I’ve been quite impressed by both Jodie’s professional work and her dedication to serving the community,” Yeager mentioned.

In addition to her devotion to Ohio State Newark, she also sits on the accounting advisory committee and alumni council of Central Ohio Technical College (COTC), from which she graduated with an associate degree in computer programming in 1983. Wheeler is a wonderful case study in the co-located campus’ ability to produce prepared professionals. “I’m a good example of how this place can launch you into your career,” she said. “It has helped me get to where I am today.”
