Hessler is an inspirational Champion of Change for preservice teachers, teachers and school psychologists in Ohio and beyond.

In August, Hessler completed a two-year state-grant-sponsored high-dosage tutoring program that allowed her to start and fund the Ohio State Newark “DISC” (Dyslexia Intervention and Screening Clinic). She trained preservice teachers to deliver foundational structured literacy instruction to kindergartners through second graders at a nearby state-sponsored charter school. During those two years, she and her colleagues served about 75 students.

Since December 2021, Hessler has provided free dyslexia screenings for anyone ages five and up, and she has screened nearly 200 individuals to date. In addition, she continues her research and professional activities related to dyslexia. Hessler is on the editorial board for Perspectives on Language & Literacy and launched a regular feature reviewing dyslexia-related books. She also reviews the International Dyslexia Association program accreditation and conference proposals every May and June.

Hessler represents the character, integrity, and combination of service and professionalism that truly make her a Champion of Change for the Ohio dyslexic community.
