“An Inspector Calls” opens at Black Box Theater

The Ohio State University at Newark’s Black Box Theater presents “An Inspector Calls,” written by J.B. Priestly and directed by Senior Lecturer Edie Norlin.

This production runs from Nov. 7-16. Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 p.m. while Sunday shows start at 2 p.m.

The play revolves around a wealthy family in a fictional industrial town in early 20th century England. Their intimate engagement celebration is interrupted by the arrival of Inspector Goole, who’s investigating the suicide of a young working-class woman. His questions reveal each family member's interconnected — and often callous — involvement in the woman’s tragic fate.

“It’s a murder mystery of sorts — quite shocking and ultimately heartbreaking,” Norlin said. “It will have audiences on the edge of their chair until the last line. Though the play is a period piece, it has contemporary themes of social justice, classism and prejudice that ring shockingly relevant today. You don’t want to miss the inspector’s unexpected visit.”

The cast includes students Abigail Ewing, Milo Flood, Josette-Lynelle Hupp, Andrew Loos and Diego Sandoval and community actors Dan Griscom and Geoffrey Mitchell.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students. All tickets are sold at the door and must be purchased with cash.

The Black Box Theater is in LeFevre Hall, located at 1199 University Drive in Newark.

“An Inspector Calls” is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York.
