Fulfilling a Dream: One Ohio State Newark Student’s Journey Toward Success

October 23, 2018

Achieving his dream of obtaining a degree from an American university has been a long path for student Mustafa Alsaeedi. After arriving in the United States in 2013, he had to study the English language for three years before he could pass the placement tests to begin his academic pursuits in the autumn of 2017 at The Ohio State University at Newark.

At the end of his second semester at Ohio State Newark, Alsaeedi received the Dean’s Award in recognition of his academic excellence.

“The feeling was indescribable and increased my enthusiasm to continue to work diligently toward my goals,” said Alsaeedi.

The achievement didn’t come easily to him. He spent countless hours utilizing resources provided by the Center for Student Success including the Math Learning Center, Writer’s Studio and Learning Skills Specialist.

“I’ve taken advantage of the resources to ensure that I maintain my academic excellence, and I can see my dreams approaching their fulfillment,” he said. “But I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without the support of the campus.”

Alsaeedi truly appreciates the small campus environment that allows for personal attention from faculty and staff. He notes that this is particularly helpful to him as an English as a second language student. He intends to graduate with his degree in business management in 2021.

“I have had many challenges, but I did not give up,” Alsaeedi said. “I am extremely proud to be here, and I now have a bigger dream to represent this university in international events.”

The Ohio State University at Newark offers an academic environment that’s inclusive of diversity, challenging but supportive with world-renowned professors and access to Ohio State’s more than 200 majors. It’s where learning comes to life. Research, study abroad and service learning opportunities prepare students for their careers in ways they never expected.
