About this event

Faculty Talks Outside the Box

A great book has a lasting impact, but what about a bad one? In 1873, the now-infamous Sex in Education; or, A Fair Chance for Girls argued that women weren’t fit for college, and it is still — 150 years later — invoked in podcasts, news articles and Supreme Court decisions. Join Carolyn Skinner, PhD, as she explores how various writers across time have referred to this book to serve a range of purposes, articulate values, and promote or resist social change.

Free and open to the public.

Speakers

Carolyn Skinner, PhD
Associate Professor, English

About this event

Celebrate the rich heritage of Black History Month at this social hour where students are encouraged to dress in the colors of Black history. Learn the powerful meanings behind each hue: black for the people of African descent, red for the sacrifices made in the struggle for liberation, yellow for optimism, justice, and equality, and green for the natural wealth and greenery of Africa. Join us to honor these symbols of resilience, hope, and unity.
