About this event

“Masked for Battle: Mardi Gras Indian Culture Confronts Covid” explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Mardi Gras Indians, also known as Black masking Indians. The Mardi Gras Indians are groups that parade on improvised routes through their neighborhoods each Mardi Gras, displaying elaborately designed costumes, also called suits, that are hand sewn with beads and feathers. 

This is the third film in a series of documentaries directed by Mike Yearling (Yearling Pictures) and produced by students at Ohio State Newark that gives voice to participants in a time-honored Black parading tradition in New Orleans. Yearling, faculty and students produced “Spirit Leads My Needle: The Big Chiefs of Carnival” in 2014 and “It’s Your Glory: The Queens of Carnival” in 2016, which was nominated for a 2016 regional Emmy.

Cultural Bearing, Civic Engagement, and the Mardi Gras Indian Queens

Sometimes called Black Indians, the Mardi Gras Indians are African Americans who mask (parade) in New Orleans during Carnival wearing elaborate handmade suits of beads and feathers. Dating back to the mid-19th century, the practice is deeply rooted in African traditions of dance and music.

The Mardi Gras Indian culture reflects Black peoples' attempts to resist the psychic brutality of dehumanization and marginalization and to create structures for individual and community development beyond their social, economic and political confines. Although less visible, the women who serve as queens are central to the tradition and the community's survival, serving as culture bearers and other mothers.

Presented in partnership with Multicultural Affairs and Black History Month.

The Black Heritage Gala is a cultural awareness event involving traditions, history, celebration and fellowship. This is an annual dinner led by students from Ohio State Newark and Central Ohio Technical College and is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Black Student Association and African Student Association. 

Guest speaker Kelly Cole will highlight the accomplishments, motivation, inspiration and intuitiveness of Madam C.J. Walker.

“Changes in Mental and Cognitive Health across Pre- and Post-Pandemic Samples” 
Professor Melissa Buelow, PhD

During the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple stories appeared in the news about increasing rates of psychological disorders, such as anxiety and depression. In addition, several stories discussed increased difficulties in making even simple, everyday decisions. But did rates of mental and cognitive health symptoms change? This presentation examines data on self-reported rates of psychological diagnoses and performance on decision-making tasks across pre-pandemic (2011-2019) and pandemic (2020-2022) samples.

This event is free and open to the pubic. Attend in person or virtually.
